Before now you might have heard people talking about Search engine optimization (SEO) and you hear them talk about black hat SEO in forums. The question is do you really know what black hat SEO is and how it can affect you?
Some websites are considered as violators of Google webmaster guideline, such websites makes use of illegal methods to get good ranking and thus these illegal methods they use are considered as black hat SEO.

However Google explains black hat SEO as the techniques which are used by people to get higher search rankings in an unethical manner.
7 Black Hat SEO Practice To Avoid
These has to do with sites that creates user experience, employ different techniques to confuse Spiders and crawlers by presenting contents in visual and non visual ways even to users and search engines.

Once something is unethical, it can never be considered ethical, and Google penguin and panda updates will treat any unethical methods used by blog or website owners. This can move your website from the first page of Google down to the bottom, but this is not even the worst part of it as there are possibilities you can still regain your stand again that’s when you repent and start correcting your mistakes. If you are penalized and banned, I think this is the worst thing that can happen to you when you practice black hat SEO where your blog will not be seen by any.

Since I have been saying some stuff about what black hat SEO is all about and how one could get penalized for doing such, I intend not to scare you as you may be left with the questions like: what are the practices to avoid in order not to be penalized by search engines? Here are the methods you must avoid if you really want to be free from penalties and rank higher in search engines.

Basically I will be talking about 7 major types of black hat SEO, what they are and how to avoid them to be free from Google's penalty.

1. Duplicate Content:

Contents are often duplicated on the web, as some people are after copy and paste, mainly from other people’s site. However, content duplicate can be placed in two categories: Duplicating of your own content and duplicating of other people’s content.

  • Duplicating your own content: You should have in mind that search engines try as much as possible to crawl and index contents on the web, so they know the first content and also get notice if the same content is publish recently as a new post on another blog or website. If you have more than one blog, let’s say Blog A & B, if you copy and publish content from blog A to B without any change, the first blog might be free while the second will be penalized. Though the two blogs: A & B are yours.

  • Contents from other sites: This is when you come across someone else hard work on the web, you are lazy to get yours done and decided to copy to your own blog and publish,  you are providing duplicate content on the web, and will automatically be penalized for doing such. Even apart from been penalized by search engines, the owner of the original content can report you over copyright issues.

2. Paid Directory Submissions:

Paid directory submission this is when people pay to other sites they think have high page rank and traffic, in order to accept the article they submit for publication, as these paid directory submissions often promise to provide people with enough backlinks. Google frowns at such act and can lead to site been penalized. However submitting articles to directories is still okay but never pay for article submission.

3. Keyword Stuffing:

Keyword stuffing means too many keywords in a post, or long lists of keywords with less content, which will get your blog or website penalized by search engines, avoid using too many keywords in your post when you are writing for your blog. Try to do proper Keyword Research and know the extent at which you should use keywords.

4. Cloaking / Doorway Pages:

A doorway page is a page that does not exist in the real sense (does not exist for users) they are fake. Users will never see such pages they are usually made to trick search engine spiders to index high on search engines.

Although these type of doorway pages are not usually created by newbie but by people who can code and think they are smart. Doorway page are like the usual HTML page, which contains keywords or phrase and then programmed to be crawled or visible to search engines. The keywords or phrase they contain are usually a high quality one, that results in higher ranking but when users lands or this page they are immediately redirected to the original or another content on the web. I.e. they use the page with high quality keywords to attract search engines and then redirect users, this may be smart but it doesn’t last as search engines spot and penalized such practices.

5. Article Submissions:

Have you submitted any article into a directory, blog or website before? Submitting of article is not wrong but articles submitted to blogs or websites with low traffic is wrong, as this is termed link spamming. If you have submitted article in the past or still have plans to submit articles in the future, make sure that you submit them to a quality blog or website that stands a good position in site ranking.

6. Comment Spamming:

Avoid comment spamming, this is the act of commenting on poor blogs or websites by website owners, leaving mainly links to their site behind every comment they make on different blog/website, remember not to add too many comments with links on blogs and websites.

7. Hidden Content (Link/Text)

Make sure that texts on your website or blog are easily seen without one necessarily stressing their eye balls. Make sure that the links in your website do not interfere with the background color of your page and are properly spaced to help visitors click on the desired link, you should imagine how it pains when you want to visit a link and ended licking on another link instead.

I hope at this point you clearly understand what black hat SEO is, the consequences of practicing it and how to avoid been penalized by search engines.
